Plans to Reach 75,000 Voters by Mail and Phone to Get Out the Vote for Markey

BOSTON, MA — The Planned Parenthood Action Fund today announced a multi-layered campaign to educate Massachusetts voters about what’s at stake for women’s health in advance of the June 25 special election. The Action Fund is the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America and endorsed Ed Markey in March. In the final days leading into the election, the group, together with its independent expenditure committee, Planned Parenthood Votes, will make an estimated 145,000 calls and will send mail to 74,300 households.

The mail pieces highlight the candidates’ positions on issues of importance to Massachusetts women and families, and read “when it comes to women’s health, we can’t trust Gabriel Gomez.” Throughout the campaign, Gomez has dodged questions about his positions on birth control and abortion. In contrast, Markey has received a 100 percent rating from the Action Fund for his votes in the U.S. House of Representatives to oppose legislation that would have restricted access to safe and legal abortion, and for his votes to support comprehensive sexuality education, birth control access, and funding for Planned Parenthood.

“Over the past few weeks the Gomez campaign has been working overtime to mislead voters about whether he supports access to birth control. While Gomez is busy dodging questions about where he stands on issues important to Massachusetts women and families, we’ll be working double time to make sure voters know the truth when they head to the polls,” said Dawn Laguens, executive vice president, Planned Parenthood Action Fund.

“The truth is, when it comes to women’s health, the choice couldn’t be clearer. Ed Markey understands that access to birth control and women’s health care are economic issues for women and their families.  Ed Markey is a tireless champion for women’s health and will be an important ally in the Senate.”

Alongside Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts, the Action Fund has worked to mobilize supporters for Markey. In advance of the primary on April 30, supporters and volunteers knocked on 1,300 doors and made 13,000 calls in support of Markey.

GABRIEL GOMEZ AND ED MARKEY ON THE ISSUES:

Gabriel Gomez:

Supports restrictions on a woman’s ability to make her own personal medical decisions.

Refuses to take a position on legislation that would have allowed bosses to deny women insurance coverage for birth control.

• Is open to a Supreme Court justice nominee who would overturn Roe v. Wade.

Ed Markey:

Strongly supports a woman’s ability to make her own personal medical decisions.

Strongly opposes the Blunt amendment which would have allowed employers to deny women coverage for birth control.

• Would only vote for a Supreme Court justice who would uphold Roe v. Wade.
