As Texas Legislature Approves Bill to Virtually End Abortion Access, the Action Fund and Supporters Pledge to Hold Them Accountable
WASHINGTON – Ignoring the thousands of Texans who have stood up in Austin and throughout the state to oppose attacks on women’s health, and the views of the vast majority of Texans, the State legislature tonight voted to pass House Bill 2, which will virtually end access to safe and legal abortion in much of the state. The bill now goes to Governor Rick Perry for his signature.
Following is a statement from Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President, Planned Parenthood Action Fund:
“If you are angry about what happened in Texas tonight – and what’s happening in other states all around the country – there is something you can do about it: Register to vote, and vote for candidates who will protect women’s access to health care.
“Make no mistake, this is a tough night for women in Texas – but it’s also a turning point for taking back this state.
“This is just the beginning. Texas women have stood up to fight back and we aren’t just going to stand and take this – we’re going to take the energy and enthusiasm that has been built here and run with it.
“Tomorrow, we will launch a new campaign to harness the outrage and energy that so many people feel right now, and to put it to work to elect leaders who will fight for women.”
Tomorrow, the Planned Parenthood Action Fund will launch a campaign to engage and mobilize people across the country, asking them to commit to defeating politicians who oppose women’s health and support leaders who stand with women. In Texas, the Planned Parenthood Action Fund will identify several key politicians who have advanced these attacks on women’s health, and will spend the next 16 months working to defeat them.
