New Research: Large Majority of Americans Continue To Support Abortion Access

With abortion bans in 21 states and counting, it can be easy to forget that politicians hostile to reproductive health are passing these laws against the will of their constituents. Recent research commissioned by Planned Parenthood Action Fund confirms what we’ve long known to be true: There is strong, widespread support for abortion access from Americans of all backgrounds and political affiliations. The research also makes clear that when asked who should make these personal medical decisions — Americans agree that politicians have no place in the exam room.

Here are some key findings:

  • Over 80% of Americans believe abortion care should be legal, regardless of their personal views on the issue. That includes 58% of conservatives.

  • Americans agree that politicians should not be making decisions on abortion. Patients and doctors are the ones who should be making decisions about care.

  • A majority of Americans understand that, even with exceptions, abortion bans do not work, since there are too many circumstances where someone may need an abortion, but not be able to get one.

  • There is strong agreement among Americans that politicians are not qualified to make decisions on abortion at any point in pregnancy. When it comes to abortion access, the American people say who is making these decisions is what matters.
