Donald Trump’s Abortion Bans Have Dire Consequences
For Immediate Release: Sept. 16, 2024
Washington, D.C. — In the two years since Roe was overturned, Donald Trump has paraded around the country, bragging about ending federal abortion rights and calling state abortion bans a “beautiful thing.” [Consider: As he boasts along the campaign trail, evidence of the devastating human toll of Trump's bans continues to mount.]
Today, ProPublica reported on the tragic story of Amber Nicole Thurman, a Georgia woman who died because the state’s abortion ban kept her from getting the care she needed. Thurman’s death was fully preventable, but Georgia’s abortion ban prevented doctors from doing a routine procedure that would have saved her life.
Just weeks ago, IndyStar reported on another state ban casualty — a pregnant patient whose death would have likely been avoided if not for the far-reaching impacts of Indiana’s abortion ban. Indiana, like states with abortion bans across the country, has struggled to recruit and retain qualified OB-GYN providers, forcing hospitals to close maternity wards. As a result, Taysha Wilkinson-Sobieski died from pregnancy-related complications, because the hospital closest to her was forced to close its labor and delivery ward just weeks prior.
While pregnant patients across the country languish because of Trump’s abortion bans, Donald Trump’s cronies are mocking their traumatic experiences. Former Trump aide and current Project 2025 strategist John McEntee posted a TikTok making a cruel joke about Kamala Harris’s comments during the debate drawing attention to the abortion access crisis. Immediately, his comments section was flooded with stories from pregnant patients who were denied or delayed basic medical care, and left in dangerous situations, because of state abortion bans. McEntee subsequently deleted his video.
“If Donald Trump wants credit for overturning Roe, then he also gets credit for the devastating – and even deadly – impacts of state abortion bans. This is the reality of abortion bans. But Donald Trump and his Project 2025 cronies care more about their own power than they care about real Americans’ lives and health care. Voters can’t trust Donald Trump to protect their rights or their lives, and they will not trust him with their vote in November,” said Jenny Lawson, executive director for Planned Parenthood Votes.
