Court refuses to tell states they cannot ban abortion in emergencies

WASHINGTON, D.C. — After months of leaving pregnant Idahoans to suffer, the Supreme Court has simply delayed its decision and refused to affirm that federal law protects the right to emergency abortion in every state — abortion ban or not. In response, Jenny Lawson, executive director of Planned Parenthood Votes released the following statement:

“We never should have been here in the first place. Instead of ruling now, the Supreme Court decided it was politically expedient to kick the can down the road to avoid ruling on abortion during an election year. But let’s be clear about who is ultimately to blame: Donald Trump who will do anything to get elected and proudly packed the Supreme Court with justices who eliminated our federal abortion rights. We know what we can expect if Donald Trump and his allies take power: a country where abortion is completely banned and pregnant people suffer and die because they are denied emergency medical care and have no control over their bodies. Ending Roe was just the beginning. Trump’s cronies already have a plan to attack our reproductive rights on day one, using every lever they can — and it’s clear they are coming for birth control and IVF next. Planned Parenthood Votes will make sure voters remember this come November.”
