SACRAMENTO—Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California issued the following statement from CEO and President Jodi Hicks on the second anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which reversed nearly 50 years of legal precedent set by Roe v Wade and revoked the constitutional right to abortion.
“It’s been two years since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade and sent the country into a chaotic tailspin. Since then, California has enacted some of the strongest abortion protections in the nation but we are not immune to the impact this decision has had across the country.
“Anti-abortion extremists are hellbent on chipping away at reproductive health care state by state until they achieve their goal of a national abortion ban, even here in California.
“Unfortunately, they are well on their way. They've already banned abortion in 21 states and are using the courts to attempt to restrict access to medication abortion and challenge the right of pregnant people to receive abortion care during a medical emergency.
“And in just the past twelve months, we’ve seen states restore Civil War-era abortion bans, allow six-week bans to take effect, designate medication abortion as a dangerous controlled substance, and pass legislation threatening access to IVF.
“Amidst the chaos and anguish that has ensued across the country the past two years, California has not become complacent and continues to fight for nationwide reproductive rights and abortion access. This November, we have a critical opportunity to hold elected officials accountable and elect unapologetic, pro-abortion politicians who are resolved in their commitment to protecting abortion access for anyone seeking care, no matter their zip code. Full stop.
“The road to reproductive freedom runs through California. Together, we can protect and secure the freedom to make our own decisions about our bodies, lives, and futures.”
