Systemic failures in the U.S. healthcare system have yielded unprecedented challenges that are forcing many healthcare providers, including Planned Parenthood of Greater New York, to take serious and immediate cost-saving measures and pursue long-term structural shifts that are consequential and heartbreaking. PPGNY has been forced to close four of it's health centers and end deep sedation at their Manhattan facility – this means that PPGNY, at least temporarily, will not be able to offer abortion care after twenty weeks. PPGNY has been forced to take very serious and immediate cost-saving measures to stay afloat due to multiple reasons, including the following:
-
Growing operating expenses
-
Unreliable insurer reimbursements
-
Ongoing pandemic recovery
-
A hostile political landscape after the Dobbs decision
-
A FY25 state budget that fell short of responding to the needs of sexual and reproductive health care providers
-
A subpar regulatory environment
As the organization stabilizes and preserves dignified access to sexual and reproductive healthcare, they are demanding more from leaders.
Since the fall of Roe, elected officials supported PPPGNY in many ways–and they are grateful for that. But now state leaders need to step up even more and be the change they want to see for their constituents. If they are to declare that New York is an access state, they must ensure that an actual pro-sexual and reproductive health and abortion care budget and regulatory environment is realized.
Join Planned Parenthood of Greater New York by signing their petition and tell your elected officials that you demand change. Let your elected officials know they must continue to fight for our communities, ensuring that abortion is not only protected in New York State but accessible for all.
