Vice President Kamala Harris at a Planned Parenthood Action Fund Rally

NEW YORK, NY– Yesterday, Planned Parenthood Action Fund announced its endorsement of VP Kamala Harris for President. This announcement comes as abortion rights, reproductive freedom, and queer and trans health care are under continued grave threat across the United States.

Statement from Dipal Shah, Executive Director, Planned Parenthood of Greater New York Action Fund:

We applaud Planned Parenthood Action Fund’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris in her presidential bid and are grateful for her longstanding commitment to fighting back against the attacks on our reproductive freedom.  As an abortion-access state, providers in New York are on the front lines every day, seeing firsthand the nationwide devastation that has been unleashed because politicians have used their power to take control of bodies, lives, and futures across the country. We also know that anti-abortion politicians are seeking to gain control of the White House so that they can implement a disastrous national abortion ban.

The moment has never been more urgent and consequential. We in New York have a tremendous responsibility in the long-term strategy for reproductive health care and rights in this post-Roe era. That is why we need to elect a leader who has demonstrated unwavering support for abortion rights and bodily autonomy. Kamala Harris has spent her career fighting to protect access to sexual and reproductive health — and for the last two years, as states have banned abortion, she has used her time and position to lift up and listen to abortion providers, patients, and advocates, including by being the first Vice President in history to visit a Planned Parenthood health center. Kamala Harris is more than qualified and ready to lead the nation as we face urgent threats to democracy and our basic rights.

It’s clear that the shared vision of Donald Trump, J.D. Vance, and Project 2025, is a national abortion ban. They represent a huge step backward. Vice President Harris’s record on protecting our reproductive freedom — including abortion — is unquestionable. We know that in this moment, we must elect leaders who will protect our democracy, ensure we can make informed decisions about our bodies, and build back the many rights that have been stripped from us.

The Biden-Harris administration:

  • issued two executive orders on protecting and securing access to reproductive health care services to lessen the harm of the abortion crisis — leveraging Medicaid to support patient travel, opening supplemental Title X funds, and making some abortion care available through the VA;
  • responded to misinformation by launching ReproductiveRights.gov – an essential source of accurate, trusted information about health care and access; and

  • issued HIPAA guidance and most recently a HIPAA rule to strengthen privacy protections for reproductive health care.

As a senator, Kamala Harris made reproductive freedom a cornerstone of her work.

  • She fought to improve Black maternal health outcomes by introducing many maternal health bills, including the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act.

  • She blocked Senate Republicans from defunding Planned Parenthood and advocated relentlessly for the Title X program, specifically against the domestic gag rule.

  • She championed birth control access, supporting multiple bills to increase affordability of contraception, as well as defending the Affordable Care Act and supporting access to sex education.

  • In the Senate Judiciary Committee, she was a leader on reproductive rights — especially when she fought to keep the issue front and center during the pivotal Supreme Court confirmation hearings of now-Justices Kavanaugh and Barrett.

  • She championed efforts to protect and expand access to sexual and reproductive health and rights around the globe by cosponsoring the Global HER Act to permanently end the global gag rule.

  • She fought to protect nationwide access to abortion at the federal level by co-sponsoring the Women’s Health Protection Act.

  • She worked to end insurance coverage bans on abortion care by co-sponsoring the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage or EACH Act.

  • Then-Sen. Harris received Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s Champion of Women’s Health Care Award in 2018 for her outstanding contributions to sexual and reproductive health and rights.
