Join us on October 10 for Fighting Forward, a fundraiser for Planned Parenthood Illinois Action (PPIA). We are excited to come together to celebrate our exciting legislative victories and secure freedom for every BODY this election season.

As a result of the work PPIA and our partners, Planned Parenthood of Illinois has seen abortion seekers from 41 states, and has welcomed more people than any other state for essential care. Together, we will ensure Illinois remains a haven for abortion rights and reproductive health, not only in the Midwest, but across the country. It will take all of us to fight the rising tide of extremism and we are ready to fight forward with you through this election and beyond.

Thank you for Fighting Forward with PPIA! We look forward to celebrating with you on October 10!

Honorees

Honorary Co-Chair: Speaker of the Illinois State House Emanuel “Chris” Welch

Emanuel “Chris” Welch was first elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 2013.  In January 2021, He became the first black lawmaker to be elected House Speaker.

Speaker Welch has been a leading voice on the issues that matter most to Illinois—expanding opportunity, fighting for equity, rebuilding Illinois’ fiscal house, defending reproductive rights, and enacting common sense gun safety.

Honorary Co-Chair: Senate President Don Harmon

Senate President Don Harmon was born and raised in Oak Park and has dedicated his Senate career to serving and improving not just his own community, but the entire State of Illinois. He was first elected to represent the 39th District in the Illinois Senate in 2002.

Senate President Harmon was appointed Assistant Majority Leader in 2009, and in 2011 was named Senate President Pro Tempore. He has spent his Senate tenure shaping policy and fighting for progressive change. In January of 2020, his colleagues recognized his efforts and elected him to be the 39th President of the Illinois Senate.

Dr. Marvin Rosner Lifetime Achievement Award: Hon. Julie Hamos

Julie Hamos has had a long career as policy advocate, public interest attorney, state legislator and state agency director.  Julie was proud to have served on the Planned Parenthood of Illinois Board for 7 years, until last year. She served previously on the Board of the Chicago affiliate (before the statewide consolidation).

In 1999, Julie was elected as a State Representative, sponsoring and passing ground-breaking legislation and winning "top legislator" awards from over 50 organizations.  She was one of the champions in the Illinois General Assembly for reproductive rights and comprehensive sex education.

When President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act in 2010, Julie was named the Director of the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, expanding Medicaid coverage in Illinois to more than half million newly eligible persons and redesigning the Medicaid healthcare delivery system. At the Department, she was the architect of the Illinois Family Planning Action Plan to improve family planning services for Medicaid clients.

Richard J. Phelan Profile in Courage Award: State Senator Lakesia Collins and State Representative Robyn Gabel

Lakesia Collins is a State Elected Official hailing from Chicago, with a dedication to public service and advocacy. As a devoted mother of three and a former nursing home worker, she brings a wealth of experience to her role. Currently representing the 5th Senate District, Lakesia has been instrumental in passing significant legislation to address various societal needs. As a freshman legislator, she successfully championed bills aimed at restoring childcare services, providing free dental care for low-income families and veterans, safeguarding reproductive rights, and reforming the Department of Children and Family Services. Senator Collins has demonstrated exemplary leadership, particularly as the former chair of the Illinois House Black Caucus. Driven by a vision of development without displacement, Lakesia remains steadfast in her pursuit of creating more opportunities for families and individuals across the 5th Senate District.

State Representative Robyn Gabel works tirelessly in Springfield to ensure our district and our state have the resources our communities need to thrive.  In 2023, Rep. Gabel was appointed Majority Leader by Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch. Her priorities include helping to lead the Illinois House of Representatives on expanding affordability and access to quality health care, increasing the safety net funding for our most vulnerable residents and a comprehensive clean energy policy.

Robyn has distinguished herself as a leader in improving the health outcomes of all Illinoisans.  Access to healthcare, the fight for reproductive freedom, and reducing disparities in women’s and childrens’ health are at the core of her life’s work. Her recent passage of the Maternal Health and Birth Equity Initiative will help reduce maternal and infant mortality among women of color by requiring commercial insurance plans to cover essential support services during pregnancy and in the first year of life.  Robyn is also committed to protecting the right of bodily autonomy. She is a champion of comprehensive reproductive healthcare, ensuring everyone has access to essential services like contraception, prenatal care, and safe, legal abortions. Through her legislative leadership, Robyn actively works to protect and expand reproductive rights, fighting restrictive measures and promoting supportive laws.
