Between writing, volunteering, and caring for her grandchildren, Penelope is a busy 64-year-old. But since her job at a research firm was eliminated several years ago, she has also been uninsured. With only part time employment and pre-existing conditions, she found herself without any good options.
Unable to afford continuing COBRA coverage at $505 a month, she tried an insurance agent, but he couldn’t help much. “The only plans he could find for me were really expensive,” she explains. So ever since, she simply had to go without coverage. “I’ve just been flying solo,” she said.
When the Affordable Care Act became law, Penelope saw a chance to get covered. But she was a little anxious about enrolling. “I was a little worried that if I did qualify for a plan, the premium was going to be too high,” Penelope said.
With the help of a PPMNS Navigator, Penelope completed her online registration and found out she qualified for Medical Assistance, including dental coverage. She enrolled in a plan that meets her needs for a premium of only $10 a month. “I am very happy with my coverage,” she says. “And I’m very relieved.”
