Republican Presidential Debate Participant Denied North Dakotans freedom to abortions with one of the most dangerous bans in the nation

Bismarck, ND — Ahead of tonight’s Republican Primary Debate, Americans need to know that presidential candidate Governor Doug Burgum signed a near total abortion ban into law in May. SB 2150 bans all abortions in North Dakota, except in very narrow circumstances where a pregnant person’s life is at risk. The Governor’s law also only provides an exception for survivors of rape or incest until six weeks of pregnancy, well before most even know they are pregnant, making the ‘exception’ essentially useless. It has been widely viewed as one of the strictest abortion bans in the nation.

Abortion rights are expected to play an important role in the 2024 elections, as many across the nation find their elected officials supporting policies at odds with what they believe: private medical decisions should stay between a patient and their doctor.

Beyond the dangerous abortion ban, Governor Burgum signed a bill in 2021 that prevents all state-funded colleges and universities from partnering with any entity that advocates for access to safe and legal abortion. Then earlier this year, he sided again with extreme legislators by signing a gender-affirming care ban for minors and legislation that allows tax dollars to fund unlicensed anti-abortion centers.

Statement from Katie Christensen, North Dakota State Director, External Affairs for Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota Action Fund:

“The majority of Americans support the right to access abortion, yet Governor Burgum signed one of the strictest and most dangerous abortion bans in the country. His extreme agenda has taken rights away and decimated health care in North Dakota. Americans deserve better than someone with Burgum’s rights-revoking record in the White House.”
