(Harrisburg, Pa.) — Today, PA Governor Josh Shapiro spoke out in support of the plaintiffs in a pending PA Supreme Court case on the state’s Medicaid abortion ban.

Pennsylvania law currently prohibits state dollars from being used for abortion, unless the life of the mother is imminently in danger. The PA Supreme Court is expected to rule in the near future on the constitutionality of this restriction.

“Abortion is legal in Pennsylvania, laws  like the Medicaid ban make it inaccessible for so many. We have long had two systems of reproductive health care access in this state: one for those with means, and another for those without. Governor Shapiro’s strong, clear stance today shows he’s a champion for everyone’s reproductive health care access,” said Planned Parenthood PA Advocates Executive Director Signe Espinoza. “We thank him for seeing this problem that so many have turned a blind eye to, and using the strength of his office and conviction to break the barriers of access.”

The Medicaid abortion ban has been in place since 1985, preventing low income Pennsylvanians from using insurance for essential care. The ban disproportionately impacts Black and brown patients, yet another consequence of systemic racism and discrimination.

Seventeen other states permit Medicaid enrollees to use their coverage for abortion care.
