2024 Alabama Legislative Session Recap

Alabama session adjourned Sine Die on May 9, 2024. During the Alabama legislative session, 844 bills were introduced. This year, we received lots of national attention for the Alabama Supreme Court's decision regarding embryos created via in vitro fertilization (IVF). They classified these embryos as people, causing an uproar and pausing IVF sessions across the state. Legislators also enacted a law banning public funding for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives (DEI). Here are some of the other most important pieces of legislation from this session.

Bills that failed:

HB 195

A bill advocating for a modified “abstinence-only” sex education bill. This bill is not comprehensive or science-based.

HB 356

A bill seeking to give tax credits to individuals and businesses donating to crisis pregnancy centers which do not provide incorrect information to pregnant individuals nor give them all of their options.

HB 378

This bill aimed to criminalize individuals assisting minors who are seeking abortion care outside of Alabama.

HB 246

This bill would’ve restricted minors’ healthcare access establishing a “medical age of majority.”

HB 111

Called the “What is a Woman” Act. This is a piece of anti-trans legislation. This bill would define man, woman, boy, girl, father, mother, male, female, and sex for purposes of state law.

One of the biggest upsets during this session is the failure to repeal the tax on menstrual products, maternity clothes, infant formula and diapers. While there was bipartisan support, there were last minute concerns about revenue.  This bill could have saved consumers across the state more money. We do intend on pushing for passage of this again next session. This pro-family bill is a step in the direction of economic justice.

Despite beating down some harmful bills, we have to remember that our work is never done. We are grateful for our wins this session, though! Remember that if your legislator is not accurately representing your views, let them know by contacting them. We appreciate all of the support during this session and outside of it!

#BansOffOurBodies

In states across the country, ultraconservative lawmakers are cutting women off from care.

We won’t let it happen.
