U.S. Supreme Court rules mifepristone will remain accessible in key abortion case
For Immediate Release: June 13, 2024
The Court’s decision will allow medication abortion access to continue uninterrupted in states where access remains available
Reno, NV — Today, the Supreme Court of the United States issued a ruling in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. Federal Drug Administration (AHA v. FDA) that affirms the FDA’s approval of mifepristone, one of two drugs used in medication abortion, is lawful. Mifepristone has been used by more than 5 million people in the United States for abortion and miscarriage care since the FDA approved it more than 20 years ago.
As the government made clear repeatedly, mifepristone is safe and effective. The fact that the case made it this far in the process is a sign of just how far anti-abortion activists, politicians, and judges will go to limit access to essential reproductive health care.
Statement of Lindsey Harmon, Executive Director, Planned Parenthood Votes Nevada:
“Today’s Supreme Court decision confirms what we’ve always known to be true – that mifepristone is safe, effective and remains a vital part of reproductive health care whether it’s miscarriage care or abortion care.
This is the first of two expected Supreme Court rulings in key abortion access cases this session, and we know that it will not end here. Nevadans are sick and tired of having their access to crucial reproductive health care like mifepristone at the mercy of anti-abortion politicians and judges, and we are taking these continued threats seriously. Planned Parenthood Votes Nevada and our partners are committed to continuing to uplift the harm of these continued attacks and do everything in our power to ensure Nevadans ability to make their own health care decisions remains where it should – between a patient and their trusted health care provider.”
