In the fight for reproductive freedom, the tireless efforts of young leaders in our movement are creating lasting change in their communities. Among these dedicated individuals are Brown University Generation Action Interns, Talia Reiss and Cara Hutton, who are advancing critical initiatives on their campus and advocating for change at the state level as part of the student organization Planned Parenthood Advocates at Brown.
Recently, Talia led a collaborative workshop on campus with Project Weber/Renew focusing on harm reduction strategies, specifically pertaining to STI prevention among individuals involved in sex work and drug use. Talia has also been an active proponent in our efforts to pass Rhode Island’s Health Care Provider Shield Bill (S2262/H7577), which would protect health care providers in Rhode Island who offer reproductive and gender-affirming health care consistent with professional standards. Talia helped organize people to provide testimony in support of the bill, and provided testimony herself.. On top of this, Talia produces a monthly newsletter which she distributes to an audience of over 500 people, keeping her community up to date on what is happening in the realm of reproductive rights both nationally and in Rhode Island.
Cara has been focused on mobilizing people who represent Planned Parenthood's patient base through the Patient Advocacy Program ensuring that we center the people most impacted in our advocacy efforts. . This legislative session, Cara has been heavily involved in mobilizing volunteers around our legislative priorities, particularly No Copay Birth Control. Like Talia, Cara has been collecting testimony and ensuring young people’s voices are centered in our advocacy at the State House.
Young people in PPV!RI’s donor-supported Generation Action Internship Program continue to turn out and lead in the fight for reproductive rights and access in our state. We must never underestimate the power of young people equipped with the skills and resources they need to make lasting change and we extend a huge thank you to Talia, Cara, and all of our Generation Action Interns fighting for reproductive freedom on their campuses and in their communities.
