COLUMBIA, S.C. – Today marks one year since the South Carolina Supreme Court reinstated the state’s law that bans abortion from the earliest stages of pregnancy, severely restricting health care before most people know they are pregnant. On the anniversary, Planned Parenthood Votes! South Atlantic announced its largest-ever and most diverse slate of candidate endorsements for the 2024 general election.
Statement from Vicki Ringer, South Carolina Director of Public Affairs for Planned Parenthood Votes! South Atlantic:
“Over the last year, we have harbored a pain that cannot be overstated, watching our elected officials – with reckless abandon – strip us of the rights our mothers and grandmothers fought for. These injustices have not gone unnoticed and they will not go unchecked.
Planned Parenthood Votes! South Atlantic has endorsed more than 70 candidates running for the South Carolina House and Senate — our largest and most diverse slate of candidates ever. In communities across our state, these candidates have risen up to challenge the cruelty of these anti-abortion politicians, champion reproductive freedom, and bring about a brighter future for South Carolina.
From the Upstate to the Lowcountry, this historic slate of candidates will fight tooth and nail to hold the line against attacks on our rights and take back our fundamental freedoms. We are proud to endorse these candidates and send them to the State House to protect our right to make our own decisions about our bodies and keep the government out of our health care.”
South Carolina’s ban on abortion has prevented thousands of people from accessing health care in their home state, forcing them to travel long distances out of state, seek care outside the formal health care system, or remain pregnant against their will.
Since August of last year, Planned Parenthood South Atlantic has been forced to turn away approximately 75% of patients seeking abortions at its Columbia and Charleston health centers. South Carolina is among the 22 states that have banned some or all abortions. One in three women of reproductive age, plus more trans and nonbinary people, are currently blocked from abortion access in their home state.
