Planned Parenthood Action Fund Releases New Analysis on Impact of Abortion Bans on Second Anniversary of Dobbs
For Immediate Release: June 24, 2024
Findings show 28 million women of reproductive age live in states with an abortion ban
Washington, D.C. — On the second anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and strip away the federal constitutional right to abortion, Planned Parenthood Action Fund has released a new analysis that shows just how many people are living under these bans.
Over the last two years, 21 states have banned some or all abortions, including restrictions on lifesaving care for people with complications. Due to overlapping factors of discrimination, racism, and economic inequality in our health care system, Black women, trans and nonbinary people face the hardest barriers to accessing the care they need and deserve.
According to the analysis:
- 43% of women of reproductive age, plus trans and nonbinary people, live in states that ban or limit abortion — that’s 28 million women of reproductive age.
- More than half of Black women, trans and nonbinary people of reproductive age live in those same states — that’s 54% or 4.8 million women, most of whom live in the South where the closest abortion clinic is as many as three states away.

Statement from Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO, Planned Parenthood Action Fund:
“This analysis only shows what we’ve known all along: Far too many women are living under abortion bans, and they are disproportionately Black women. We cannot let this remain our reality for much longer. Behind these numbers are real people with real lives — people who, for all kinds of reasons, need this potentially life-saving care. We’re the experts on our own lives and needs, and should be able to make decisions about our own bodies — not politicians.”
Since the overturning of Roe, anti-abortion rights lawmakers and their allies have worked nonstop to ban abortion care. Their ultimate goal has never changed: to ban abortion nationwide and make sexual and reproductive health care inaccessible.
