In today’s Quickie: Louisiana Gov. signs bill criminalizing medication abortion.

LOUISIANA GOVERNOR SIGNS BILL TO CRIMINALIZE SAFE, EFFECTIVE MEDICATIONS: Last Friday, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry signed into law SB 276  — a bill that adds mifepristone and misoprostol to Schedule IV of the state’s Controlled Substances Act, creating significant barriers to access and harsh punishment for providers. These medications are safe, effective, and routinely used not just for abortion care but for miscarriage management, inducing labor, and even preventing stomach ulcers.

Louisianans already face the highest rates of maternal mortality and morbidity. A recent report also shows that the state’s abortion ban has restricted providers’ ability to use their best medical judgment. This bill means that in addition to these preexisting restrictions on health care, Louisiana is now facing the prospect of a reality where doctors can’t determine the best medications to give their patients.

At no point in pregnancy is a politician more qualified to make your health care decisions than you and your doctor. But anti-abortion politicians are determined to bring politics into your exam room, and they aren’t stopping at banning abortion.
