In today’s Quickie: More than half of Black women 15-49 live in states with limited abortion access and PPIL expands medication abortion services.

JUST IN: MORE THAN HALF OF BLACK WOMEN 15-49 YEARS OLD LIVE IN STATES WITH HARDLY ANY ABORTION ACCESS: New data from the National Partnership for Women & Families (NPWF) and In Our Own Voice sheds light on the severity of the abortion access crisis for Black women. More than half of U.S. Black women of reproductive age — 57%, to be exact — live in states with little to no abortion access. Of those 57%, nearly half live in Texas, Florida, or Georgia.

A significant portion of these nearly seven million women living with no or almost no abortion access must also face related concerns such as lack of financial security, high cost of living, and racial injustice.

PLANNED PARENTHOOD ILLINOIS EXPANDS MEDICATION ABORTION SERVICES THROUGH PP DIRECT: The Planned Parenthood Direct app — which allows patients who are up to 10 weeks pregnant to mail-order medication abortion — has expanded to Illinois. Providers review the screening information submitted by patients within 24 hours and mail the medication if approved. PP Direct is also used for other services, like birth control or treatment of urinary tract infections. Planned Parenthood affiliates in Maryland, Washington, and Hawaii already offer medication abortion services through the app.

Dr. Colleen McNicholas, chief medical officer for Reproductive Health Services of Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region explains, “This is just for us the next step in reducing barriers for folks who don’t want to make it all the way to a health center or who need the privacy of being able to do it from their home.”
