Welcome to “The Quickie”

Welcome to “The Quickie” — Planned Parenthood Action Fund’s daily tipsheet on the top health care & reproductive rights stories of the day. You can read “The Quickie'' online here.

In today’s Quickie: PP Votes spotlight on the debate and NH primary and 1 in 3 U.S. counties lack obstetric providers.

PP VOTES REACTS TO TRUMP’S ABORTION LIES DURING THE DEBATE: At the presidential debate last night, Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump laid out dramatically different visions for the future of America. While Vice President Harris shared her plans to protect our rights and freedom, Trump’s first comment about abortion was to spread lies, proving that voters cannot trust him with our reproductive freedom. In response to Trump’s comments, Jenny Lawson, executive director of Planned Parenthood Votes released the following statement:

“Here are the facts: At no point in pregnancy is a politician more qualified to make your medical decisions than you and your doctor. Donald Trump is the reason Roe was overturned and we lost our right to abortion under the federal constitution. He is the reason abortion is banned in 22 states. And he is the reason millions of people can’t access basic reproductive health care like miscarriage management. Voters won’t fall for his lies and incoherent rambling.”

GRANITE STATERS DESERVE A REPRO RIGHTS CHAMP AS THEIR GOVERNOR: Yesterday night’s gubernatorial primary in New Hampshire solidified the choice for November’s election: Joyce Craig, who will expand abortion rights in the Granite State, faces off against Kelly Ayotte, who has a long track record of supporting anti-abortion policies. Following last night’s results, Kayla Montgomery, spokesperson for Planned Parenthood Votes in New Hampshire, issued the following statement:

“Kelly Ayotte, both as New Hampshire’s attorney general and as U.S. Senator, never missed an opportunity to attack Granite Staters’ reproductive freedom: she repeatedly voted to defund Planned Parenthood; voted for a national abortion ban; supported making birth control harder to access; and first claimed the political spotlight by trying to make abortion harder to access. Ayotte now wants to distance herself from her staunch anti-abortion record, but Granite Staters see right through her. They deserve a champion like Joyce Craig who trusts people to make their own decisions about their own lives.”

1 IN 3 COUNTIES IN THE UNITES STATES LACK OBSTETRIC DOCTORS TO PROVIDE CARE: A new report from March of Dimes exposes a maternity care crisis in the United States where 1 in 3 counties lack obstetric care providers. In 2022, 85% of babies born were delivered by OB-GYNs, but new projections from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) predict a shortage of 12,000 to 15,000 OB-GYNs by 2050.

The report cites that the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade has significantly affected how and where OB-GYNs train and practice. Dr. Amanda Williams, interim chief medical officer for March of Dimes, explained, “In those states that have the strictest abortion bans, there are an increased number of providers who say that it is changing the way that they’re able to take care of their patients.”
