Idaho Attorney General Labrador Signs On to Harmful Amicus Brief
Regarding Parental Control
For Immediate Release: July 18, 2024
BOISE, ID — Earlier this month, Idaho Attorney General Labrador signed on to an amicus brief requesting the U.S. Supreme Court hear a case centered on protecting parental rights to “make decisions concerning the care, custody, and control of their children.” The key word here: control.
If successful, the case could dismantle rights to protect trans and nonbinary students including forced outings of students regardless of the danger this could put the student in at home. It could also require students to use facilities like restrooms and locker rooms based on their sex assigned at birth.
Attorney General Labrador’s support of the suit comes just months after the state passed harmful laws for trans and nonbinary Idahoans. This includes banning the use of public funds like Medicaid for care of trans and nonbinary people, requiring parental consent on private health care decisions made by minors and attempting to erase trans and nonbinary people from the state by claiming that sex and gender are the same thing and that there are only two genders — a factual inaccuracy.
Statement from Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates Idaho State Director Mistie DelliCarpini-Tolman:
“Despite open and abundant opposition to the harmful laws the Idaho legislature passed last session, Attorney General Labrador quietly signed on to yet another lawsuit to make Idaho even less safe for LGBTQ+ people. Our tax dollars are being spent on expensive lawsuits that don’t reflect Idahoans’ values. They have the singular goal of stripping people of their freedoms.
We would encourage Attorney General Labrador to listen to Idahoans most impacted by these laws, rather than outside groups with political agendas. All people thrive when they are free to be themselves and all people deserve the chance to be happy.”
